Fence & deck cleaning

Exterior wood needs restraint, not brute force.

Weathered wood, coatings, grain, fasteners, splintering, and sun exposure all shape what cleaning can safely improve and how the surface may look afterward.

Typical scope

Clean with the grain and the condition in mind.

Fence boards, decks, pergolas, gates, and some composite materials may qualify after evaluation. Lower pressure, appropriate treatment, careful rinsing, and controlled distance help reduce the risk of raised grain or visible wand marks.

Cleaning can prepare a sound surface, but it is not refinishing.

  • Identify wood species, composite material, and coatings
  • Review rot, splintering, loose boards, and fasteners
  • Set expectations for gray weathering and failed stain
  • Scope sanding, repair, staining, or sealing separately if offered

Condition-led care

The test area tells part of the story.

01

Inspect

Review material, grain, age, coatings, repairs, fasteners, vegetation, and nearby finishes.

02

Test & clean

Use a compatible approach and test uncertain areas before proceeding across the full surface.

03

Dry & assess

Allow the material to dry before judging final color or planning any later finish work.

Wood-cleaning questions

Understand the surface after the rinse.

01 Will cleaning restore wood to a new color?

No universal result can be promised. UV exposure, weathering, previous coatings, tannins, repairs, and age can leave permanent color variation even after surface buildup is removed.

02 Is staining or sealing included?

Cleaning is a separate preparation step. Sanding, repairs, stain, sealer, and application conditions require their own scope and are not included unless specifically listed in the proposal.

03 Can damaged wood be cleaned?

Rotten, loose, heavily splintered, or structurally unsound sections may need repair before cleaning or may be excluded. Existing damage is documented during evaluation.
